Dr Tony Bleetman

MD PhD FRCSEd FRCEM DipIMC RCSEd

Chairman & CEO

Dr Bleetman has over 28 years as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. He has extensive experience in trauma care, as a Consultant Trauma Team Leader at St.Mary’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre for 3 years and 12 years of service with Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), including a 3-year period as Clinical Director of Midlands Air Ambulance.

He was awarded The Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals for his work in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine.
Dr Bleetman is Associate Clinical Professor at Warwick Medical School. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Neuroscience, Surgery and Trauma, Blizard Institute (Queen Mary University London).

He has published extensively and has an active research portfolio. He currently serves as a medical advisor to the Ministry of Defence and works both in NHS Emergency Departments and as an Attending Emergency Physician in the Middle East.

Dr Ben Bloom

Dr Ben Bloom has been a Consultant in Emergency Medicine for 10 years. He graduated has been from St. Andrew’s & Manchester Universities.

He is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at The Royal London Hospital. His clinical interests include major trauma, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and infectious emergencies.

Dr Bloom is a Senior Lecturer in Emergency Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London and a Clinical Lead at NHS England for Integrated Urgent and Emergency Care. His PhD is on Traumatic Brain Injury, and his research interests include population health and health informatics.

He is a module lead for the Masters in Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine at QMUL, presenting ‘Fundamentals of Research’.

Dr Derek Hicks

Medical Director

Dr Derek Hicks has been a Consultant in Emergency Medicine for 15 years. He graduated from Guy’s & St. Thomas’s Hospitals, London. He is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at The Royal London Hospital. His clinical interests include major trauma, telemedicine and resuscitation.

 
Dr Hicks has 10 years of experience in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine, working with HEMS teams in Kent Surrey & Sussex and Essex & Herts. He has worked as Clinical Lead and Clinical Director in North East London Emergency Departments and was Network Director for North East London and Essex Trauma Network for 8 years. 

He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London and has an active portfolio of research presented at National and International level focussed on trauma care. His team won the ‘Evidence into Practice Award’ at the International Conference for Emergency Medicine 2024, in Taipei. He is a Royal College of Pathologists Medical Examiner and contributes to clinical governance, patient safety and human factors in healthcare.

Dr Amutha Anpananthar

Paediatric Lead & Director

Dr Anpananthar has been a Consultant in Emergency Medicine for 8 years. She graduated from University College London.


She works as Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at Whipps Cross University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. She works alongside General Paediatric colleagues to provide seamless care for sick children between community, secondary and tertiary care.

Amutha is a Lead for Medical Simulation Education and has experience as Training Programme Director for the London School of Paediatrics. She is an Instructor for Advanced Paediatrics Life Support Courses.
Dr Anpananthar is site lead and Trust Principal Investigator for clinical research in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

Tim is the Master General Medical; Colonel Commandant of the Royal Army Medical Service; a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of West Midlands; a Trustee of three charities; an Associate Fellow at Chatham House; and Honorary Professor of Emergency Medicine at both the University of Warwick and the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade.

Tim retired from active military duty in December 2024 after 41 years of commissioned service, having held the strategic appointments of Surgeon General of the UK Armed Forces, the elected Chair of the Committee of Military Medical Chiefs in NATO, and Honorary Surgeon to His Majesty the King. He is known as a thought leader; inventor of concepts, equipment and curricula; and a pioneer within combat casualty care and disaster medicine.

Tim has authored 37 books and was described in a BMA dossier as one of the most innovative doctors in the country, having also received the accolade of “Hospital Doctor of the Year” across the NHS. He has been awarded 20 academic medals, two honorary doctorate degrees, and four institutional Fellowships by distinction, including a prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine for his career achievement. International awards include the Order of Military Medical Merit from the United States and the Defence Medal for Meritorious Service from Denmark.

Professor Ian Maconochie

Strategic Paediatric Advisor & Non-Executive Director

Professor Ian Maconochie is a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, where he established the department in 2000. He instigated the setting up of the Association of Paediatric Emergency Medicine (APEM) for the UK and Ireland and has played a key role in developing national and European paediatric emergency training curricula. In 2018, he was appointed Professor of Practice in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Imperial College London, the first such post in the UK.

He has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers and advises national and international bodies on paediatric emergency care and resuscitation. A long-standing member of the Resuscitation Council UK since 1992, he became its Honorary Secretary in 2019. He has served on the European Resuscitation Council Board, co-chaired its Paediatric Scientific Advisory Committee, and contributed to European Resuscitation Guidelines 2010–2025.

Internationally, he has held leadership roles within ILCOR, including Co-Chair for Paediatrics and Vice-Chair of its Conflict of Interest Committee (Chair from 2025). He has held academic appointments in Australia, South Africa, and the UK, and was Registrar of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (2012–2017). In 2025, he was appointed Boon Wong Hock Visiting Professor to Singapore and continues to advise the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales.
